There are many different types of pruning.
Thinning : this is the most important prune for the health care of a tree in an urban setting. Thinning improves air flow throughout the canopy of the tree lowering the humidity which decreases chances of fungus and disease. It also creates a less comfortable environment for insects (which carry disease and fungus) such as aphids and borer. Thinning helps in the prevention of storm damage. When high wind hit a thick tree the foliage acts as a sail causing the tree to sway to breaking points.
Deadwood removal : is encouraged to be done any time a tree is being pruned as it helps the tree to heal faster. Deadwooding is also essential for safety as a falling dead branch can be harmful to people and property.
Directional : encouraging growth in a specific direction, generally intended to guide a trees growth away from structures, property lines or power lines.
Vista : Thinning, elevating and/or shaping to ensure visibility, unity and aesthetics generally done in parking lots at shopping malls, commercial and industrial buildings.
